About Me

Horsehead Nebula (My favorite astro photo)
Thanks for stopping by to look at my quilts.
I have been quilting for over 20 years and have tried many techniques during that time. Initially when I started quilting I traced and cut out each piece by hand because I did not know that rotary cutters existed. I pieced by machine and pressed the seams open since that's what I was used to doing when making clothing. I only quilted by hand back in those days. So this is how I did my first 3 quilts. I guess the first 3 were a learning experience
Eventually I learned all the short cut techniques for cutting and piecing using a rotary cutter and improved my accuracy. I got better at hand quilting and did several more quilts. At some point I decided to try machine quilting. My first attempts at that were not too pretty. However, I did get better and pretty much abandoned hand quilting although currently I am hand quilting a small wall hanging for my husband called "Scotland the Brave."
For many years I made a lot of miniature quilts and did plenty of paper piecing. In fact I used to be called the paper piecing queen! Many of these quilts were given away as gifts to teachers. I got a lot of my ideas from Miniature Quilt Magazine. Unfortunately this magazine has not been published in about 10 years or so.
Currently I am trying to do more art type quilts. Interestingly enough when I started quilting I hated art quilts and would only make traditional quilts. It's funny how your ideas change over the years and how you evolve as a quilter. I guess that's what keeps quilting exciting for all of us.
And if you are wondering why "Quilting Universe".....I also teach astronomy in a college in New Jersey. Maybe one of these days I will have to make a series of astronomy quilts.......
